Port Vale Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of 26-year old midfielder Danny Whitehead on a free transfer.
The midfielder has signed a two-year deal, keeping him at the club until June 2022.
Whitehead, who spent part of last season on loan at Macclesfield Town, signs after having played for Salford City from May 2018.
Whitehead started his senior football career at Stockport County, having signed professionally in 2011.
His impressive performances for Stockport led to a move to Premier League side West Ham United in June 2013.
After appearing frequently for the Irons’ under-21 side, Whitehead signed a short-term contract with Accrington Stanley in March 2015.
In the summer of 2015, Whitehead signed for Macclesfield Town, and impressed enough in the opening stages of the 2015/16 to earn himself a move to Wigan Athletic, though he was loaned back to the Silkmen for the remainder of the season.
The midfielder then spent the 2016/17 on loan at Cheltenham Town, before returning on loan to Macclesfield for the second half of that season.
After another successful spell on loan with the Silkmen, Whitehead returned to the club on a permanent deal.
In May 2018, Whitehead made the move to Salford City and played a part in their promotion from the National League.
Whitehead played his part in consolidating Salford’s place in League Two in the first half of last season, before moving to Macclesfield Town on loan for the remainder of the season.
“He’s very energetic, good footballer – he’ll be another good addition to an already strong midfield,” said Manager John Askey.
“He’ll have to compete with the rest of the players, he’s a solid player who has proved himself at this level – in recent years he’s had two promotions so hopefully he can get in the side and keep his place.”
“We tried to get Danny in before but obviously he was under contract at Salford. He’s agreed a mutual termination as he had a year left on his contract.”
Whitehead has made 224 senior appearances during his career, scoring 23 goals in that time.
