Last time we met Newport County

Port Vale make the trip to south east Wales on Tuesday night to face Newport County in Sky Bet League Two action, but what happened last time the two sides met?

Tom Pope scored his 56th goal at Vale Park, setting a new record at the Burslem ground, though it wasn't enough to claim any points against the Exiles as Newport ran out 2-1 winners, featuring a certain Mark Harris.

After a strong start to the season, Newport came to Vale Park looking to strenghten their position in the league with a top two place up for grabs, though Vale were looking for their third win of the season to steer clear of the relegation zone.

Despite a strong start to the game, Vale fell behind with 18 minutes on the clock following a goal-mouth scramble. The ball pinged about the box before falling to Scot Bennett who smashed in off the post.

The Valiants piled on the pressure following the opener and got a deserved goal with 27 minutes played. Tom Pope slammed home a header from inside the box to break the all-time goalscoring record at Vale Park, taking his tally to 56 goals at the home of Port Vale.

Just six minutes later, Pope's day almost got that much better, with just the post denying him from adding a  second following a Cristian Montano cross.

However, the Exiles came flying out of the blocks following the restart and went ahead on 47 minutes. Dan Butler was on hand to poke home from inside the box as Vale failed to clear their lines.

Vale threw everything at Newport as the clock ticked down, though couldn't manage to get back on level terms with the high flyers. Following the tie, Newport climbed the table to second place, whereas Vale dropped a few to 19th.
