Vale Reserves easily overcame a Doncaster Rovers team in their first home fixture of the season as Aspin and Rudge had another opportunity to look at the players available in a competitive fixture.
The first 20 minutes were well contested but offered nothing in the way of chances but Vale then took the lead with a stunning 25 yard strike from Stobbs. Vale attacked up the left and as Montano was tackled on the edge of the area the ball ran free and found its way to Stobbs out on the right hand side of the penalty area, who moved past his marker and turned goalwards in one movement before unleashing a shot back across the ‘keeper and into the far side of the goal.
Rovers then had their best opportunity of the game as a pass split Vale’s defence allowing Morris a sight of goal, but a moments hesitation allowed Yates to get back to pull off a saving tackle and the free ball was then shot goalwards bringing a good save from Boot who pushed it past the post.
Vale quickly responded with Middleton seeing a shot parried by Marosi and in the 39th minute Montano saw a shot charged down resulting in a corner and from this there was a goalmouth scramble but the ball just wouldn’t drop for a clear shot at goal. Vale deserved their half-time lead but there were very few incidents of note.
Vale took Montano off for the second period and gave Reeves a run-out and within 3 minutes were 2 up as a Stobbs cross reached the far post where Turner steered the ball home.
The home side were all over the visitors at this point and a cross from Turner saw Barnett heading just wide of the goal.
Moments later, Tyrone returned the favour as he put in Turner to run at goal and although he beat the ‘keeper the ball ran agonisingly wide of the far post. Stobbs was continuing to be a threat and he cut in on goal again and unleashed a dipping volley that dropped just over the bar.
Turner, again put in a dangerous cross that Barnett was only inches away from reaching and another cross from the youngster which was aimed towards the far post saw a defender nick it off Stobbs’ toe at the far post.
A few minutes later, a Stobbs cross was half cleared to Barnett who hit his shot into the ground and it bounced up into the arms of the ‘keeper and safety.
Vale almost added a deserved third as the game entered added-on time as Turner set up Middleton and his shot was tipped on to the post by Marosi at full stretch. Vale Reserves have now won 3 games and drawn the other, all without conceding a goal.
