Alex Jones Talks Goals

Alex Jones continues to make his own headlines at Port Vale, as he rescues yet another priceless point for the Valiants with an 85th minutes penalty.

On Tuesday night, Port Vale welcomed the visit of Charlton Athletic, who were fresh off their 3-0 win over Coventry City at the weekend.

Conversely, Vale were deflated after their 4-0 defeat away at Sheffield United.

league goal of the season from the spot, lifting Vale back into the play-off places: “thJones scored his 8Obviously I’m delighted to get another goal, but it is more important to get a point for the team,” he said.

Jones had missed his last penalty, but converted the rebound to secure their forst away win of the season at MK Dons, nine days ago, but this time he made not mistake from 12-yards: “I wanted to get that one out of my system and tuck it away.

He added: “Maybe this one is a bit fortunate as well, but I’ve just hit it down the middle and he’s dived out of the way of it for it to creep in.”

Jones is Vale’s top-scorer so far this season, all whilst playing in a variety of positions in order to accommodate the gaffer’s wishes.

Despite this, Jones puts emphasis on playing for the team, rather than himself: “I just wanted to get on the ball. There was a spell in the first half where I didn’t touch the ball for 5 minutes, so me and Sam [Hart] rotated and I tried to get on the ball more. In the second half I played down the middle because Paterson went off, and tried to do all I could to get the points.”

Port Vale welcome the visit League One new boys Oxford United to Vale Park on Saturday, a fixture in which Jones is eager to capitalise on: “It’s another massive game. We will get some good recovery in over the past few days and be raring to go come Saturday.

“We will look to start quick and be sharp out of the blocks, and hopefully we can get the three points.”
