Elsewhere, it was a day of first’s for new manager Bruno Ribeiro, as he took to the dugout for the first time to watch his Vale side.

In a side that consisted of new signings made under Bruno, the Valiants ran out comfortable winners.

Although the game was a friendly fixture, Ribeiro was ‘very happy’ with his side, in which he fielded two different teams in each half.

He said: “I’m very happy, I’m very happy with all the players in my squad, we have 27 players and everyone is doing good and are keeping fit, but Ben Purkiss has a few problems, not big problems, so he will start training this week.

“It was pleasing during the two halves, everybody worked hard; some of the movement was good and then some of it was not, but that is normal for the first week.
