Vale had matched their hosts for much of the game, and in fact dominated in spells, but were unable to find that all important goal their play deserved.
Former Vale striker Tom Pope started the game but was unable to have a huge impact and was substituted during the second half.
Vale made one change to the starting line-up for the trip to Bury, with Ryan Inniss returning to the starting line-up in place on Remie Streete, who had to make do with a place on the bench.

The Vale ‘keeper got down smartly to his left to push away a los drive from Danny Mayor and then seconds later dropped down to his right to make the save from Jacob Mellis.
Coming into the game on the back of away wins at both Walsall and Sheffield United, the home side were full of confidence, despite still looking for their first home win of the season.
Yet Vale were matching their hosts and were pushing forward at every opportunity, although Bury ‘keeper Rob Lainton had little to do in the opening minutes of the game.
There was a break in play after Ryan Inniss went down inside the Bury six yard box and the defender lay motionless for a couple of minutes while he received treatment, but he was soon able to take up his place in the heart of the defence.
Play switched from one end to the other with little in the way of clear cut chances for either side, but there was a half chance for the host when the ball fell to the feet of Pope, who turned sharply but fired wide of the target.
Anthony Grant bossed the centre of the park at times and was instrumental in much that Vale did well. It was he who began the move which almost saw Vale go in front on 37 minutes.
Winning the ball in the centre circle, he made time to look exactly what was on and threaded the ball through to Byron Moore on the right.
The ball was played into the feet of Uche Ikpeazu on the edge of the six yard box and the big striker managed to turn sharply to get in a shot, but Lainton in the Bury goal had read the situation well, and was on hand to make the save.
Vale began the second half very much on the front foot, driving forward in numbers and forcing the home defence to defend deep inside their own half.
Ryan Inniss and Richard Duffy were each within a whisker of getting on the end of a terrific angled cross from the right from Sam Foley as Vale went looking for an early second half goal.
Understandably, Vale were unable to sustain that king of pressure for too long and began to assert themselves on the game for a spell.
But Vale were far from finished and they continued to press at every opportunity. Former Vale loanee Peter Clarke came to the rescue on one occasion when Uche Ikpeazu moved the ball onto his left foot to shoot, but Clarke slid in to block.
