Following his retirement, he made a successful transition into coaching and in 2001 he was appointed to take charge of Swindon Town’s youth team.
The 50-year-old has worked in the Welsh national set-up under Chris Coleman and has also coached in Southampton’s esteemed category one Academy.
Speaking about the appointment of his new assistant, Vale boss Rob Page said: “I’m delighted to welcome Paul to Port Vale Football Club.
“He’s someone I know very well and I believe he will make a really positive impact here.”
