Neil Lennon will bring his side to Burslem on the back of a 2014/15 campaign which saw them finish 18th in the league table.
The Northern Irishman took charge of the club in October 2014, signing a four-year contract, after the Trotters had endured a poor start to the season.
They enjoyed a memorable fourth round FA Cup tie with Liverpool, keeping a clean sheet on their way to a goalless draw at Anfield.
They lost the replay at home 2-1 thanks to a spectacular Philippe Coutinho strike but had threatened to cause a shock before the sending off of Neil Danns.
The Valiants were beaten by Bolton at Vale Park last pre-season. Matt Mills and Jermaine Beckford scored for Wanderers while Tom Pope netted for the hosts.
The last competitive meeting between the sides was over 15 years ago at what was then the Reebok Stadium in the old First Division.
Eidur Gudjohnsen and Allan Johnston scored for Bolton in a 2-1 win, which saw Ville Viljanen get a 53rd minute goal for Vale.
