Gaffer's Thoughts

Boss expecting tough game today

Micky Adams will be taking nothing for granted when Notts County are the visitors to Vale Park this afternoon and knows Vale are in for another tough game.

Vale need to pick themselves up after a poor performance against MK Dons last weekend and the manager knows the Magpies will come here in a confident mood following their recent results.

He said: “They are scrapping for their lives. They have got some decent loan players with a sprinkling of experienced pros, such as Dean Leacock and Alan Sheehan at the back.

“We know that generally when a new manager comes into a football club it takes him time to get his philosophy over to the players and they look, with their results of late, they are getting there.

“But it’s not about them, it’s about us, it’s about our response from a set-back like we had on Saturday against MK Dons.

“The players were disappointed and I don’t think there was anybody who came out of the game on Saturday with any credit at all and that is unusual.

“Normally when you have had a set-back like that, a heavy defeat, there are always one or two who you can say, ‘well at least he had a go and he did well’, but I didn’t see that on Saturday.

“I think it would be wrong of me to accept a performance like that and say to the boys ‘same again, try and put it right’. There are players that are waiting for an opportunity and I will give it to them against Notts County.

“When the games come thick and fast over the Christmas period in a short space of time if you can nick a few results it gives you a boost going into the New Year.

“But nothing will be decided, there won’t be any promotions or relegation issues sorted around the Christmas period - that comes a bit later.

“Notts County had a decent result on Saturday. They got a late goal against Bristol City, went to Colchester and won quite comfortably in their previous game and so we will pay them as much respect as we always do with all opposition.”
