Midland Youth Cup: Vale Youth vs Lincoln City

Lincoln City 2 Port Vale 2 (Lincoln won 4-3 after extra time)

Midland Youth Cup 1st round

Vale lost a close fought game on penalties despite twice coming from behind. Holders of the cup Lincoln took a tenth minute lead when a cross from the left by Mason Love saw Jenk Acar volley the ball goalwards and Kieran Helsdown scored from close range.

Jonathan Kapend had a shot saved as Vale hit back and they deservedly drew level in the 41st minute. A ball into the box from the left fell to Chekaine Steele and he lashed the ball home with a good shot from 20 yards.

Vale were in the ascendancy after the break and were looking the more likely to score when it was Lincoln who regained the lead in the 70th minute. A corner from the right went over to the far post and Helsdown scored with a powerful header.

The visitors drew level for a second time with just five minutes left on the clock. Steele had a low shot parried by Henry Smith and Alex Morris was on hand to drive the rebound home.

Extra time failed to produce a winner and so it was penalties.

Kapend had his effort saved and the next seven were all scored, Vale’s successes coming from Steele, Billy Reeves and Captain Lewis Bergin. That left Omar Haughton needing to score, but his effort was saved so Vale lost out 4-3.
